Lounge Thoughts

Welcome to October! It’s the spookiest month of the year as the long dark approaches and Cuffing Season begins!

Luckily for you, finding a partner (or a new friend) doesn’t have to be so spooky. We’ve got three great events planned for this month to kick things off and we thought we would provide some tips for success at each!

First Thursdays

First off, we’ve got First Thursdays on October 3rd. This is our low-pressure hang at a local bar. It’s a great way to test the waters and put yourself out there without too much pressure. Whether you are looking for friends, dates, or something in between, you can use our name tag system to customize your experience. Select Green for dating, red for friends, or blue if it’s complicated. Make the most of this event by sitting down with a group and jumping into the conversation. We’re a welcoming bunch so don’t be shy! When it feels natural, feel free to get up and visit another group. By talking with multiple groups, you may just find someone you hit it off with. And if you do connect with someone then follow SSC’s recommended approach for exchanging contact information:

  1. Write down your name and number on a card.

  2. When it feels natural say “I really enjoyed our conversation and would love to hang out again, here’s my number”

  3. Hand them the card.

By flipping the script on asking for someone’s number, you allow for consent to be given without awkward social pressure and you avoid the uncomfortable shuffle and/or pressure on the person if the feeling is not mutual. If you never hear from them again, don’t take it personally, we at SSC provide an environment where it’s safe to say No and there is no pressure to reach out. Just hold your head high, tell yourself it’s not about you, and move on to bigger and better things.

If you receive someone’s contact info, and you’re not keen on hanging out with them, feel free to just accept their info and thank them before carrying on with your night. There’s no pressure to reach out, its ok to say No to things you don’t want to do, and not reaching out is a No.

Pitch a Friend

One of our favorite events, Pitch a Friend returns on October 18th! Its sure to be a very fun event as everyone’s dressing in Costumes and we’re bringing back the DJ for a night of dancing.

We still need more presenters so if you’re considering being presented or have a friend in mind, submit your application! While it may seem intimidating, there is noting to worry about, the audience is always very supportive and understanding of putting yourself out there. If you have questions or want us to help alleviate your fears, dm us on instagram! Applications are due October 8th.

If you’re considering presenting or being presented here are some tips to make the most out of your presentation:

  1. Use lots of images and color! Imagery and color captivate the audiences attention and keep them paying attention. We don’t have sound so audio/video might be difficult.

  2. Include what the person is looking for in terms of age, sexuality, gender, and type of person.

  3. Choose a theme for your presentation and stick with it. We’ve had folks in the past make Amazon pages, start up pitch decks, Spongebob themes and more. The audience loves a theme!

  4. Use humor! The audience is all over the age of 21 so don’t be afraid to make it spicy!

  5. Have fun! Pitch a friend is meant to be a fun, lighthearted way to find potential partners. If you’re not having fun in the process, you’re doing it wrong!

  6. Dress in costume! It’s a costume party after all!

If you’re attending as an audience member then remember the following:

  1. Follow our recommended approach to exchanging contact information above. Always give your number out instead of asking for someone else’s.

  2. Use our name tag system to customize your experience!

  3. Use our pitch a friend app, to reach out to presentees! Pay attention to their presentations and reference something from it in your first message to them!

  4. Feel free to go up to presentee’s during breaks and at the after party and strike up a conversation. Try to reference their presentation in your ice breaker.

  5. While we encourage folks to chat with presentee’s make sure to also leave room for mystery. Allow them space to continue their night once you’ve broken the ice. They are likely to be overwhelmed by people wanting to chat with them so dominating their time may stress them out.

  6. Think of fun questions during the presentation. Each presentation has 1-2 mins allowed for question and answer at the end. Stand out by asking a fun question!

  7. Dress in costume! It’s a costume party after all!

Pitch a friend is sure to be a fun event so come join in the fun!

Speed Dating

A Seattle Social Club classic, Speed Dating is on October 23rd! You’ll sit down with roughly 12-15 potential dates for around 4 minutes each. After 4 minutes, you’ll get up and move to the next date. After all the dates, hang out for an open mixer with attendees to: follow up on great dates, meet those you didn’t get to sit with, or have a cold beer to relax! At the end of the night, you’ll submit up to 5 people you’d like to see again and if the feeling is mutual we’ll connect you two with each others contact information. It’s a fun fast paced way to do a vibe check and put yourself out there!

If you’re looking to make the most of your time remember these tips:

  1. Take a deep breath before each date and then smile. This will refresh you and the endorphins from smiling will prepare you for your next date.

  2. Not every date is going to be smooth sailing. There’s bound to be awkwardness, shyness, and a bit of uncomfortableness. That’s ok. Embrace the awkward and have fun with it! Just in case we provide some conversation starters for you.

  3. Approach each date with zero expectations! Don’t think about the future too much, what a life looks like with them, or where things will go. Instead, just ask yourself the question: “Would I like to see them again?” or “Do I want to see where this goes?”. This approach takes all the pressure off the interaction and allows for natural conversation and expectations.

  4. Be yourself! Don’t approach the date trying to get the other person to like you. Instead, you should be focused solely on “Do I like them?”. Whether they like you or not, is not your task to worry about. This will also lead to more natural conversations with some back and forth rather than you just rambling about yourself the whole time.

  5. Remember it’s only four minutes! Time is going to fly by and you’ll feel like you want to know more! When this happens, it’s a good sign to follow up with them or put them on your match form.

  6. Choose wisely on the match form! You only have 5 matches and they only have 5 matches. Use the odds to ensure a match. If you put down someone solely because you thought they were hot, but the conversation was meh, the chances of a match are very low. But if you both had an amazing conversation and the time flew by, thats a good sign the feeling is mutual and you should put them down and follow up.

  7. Don’t feel bad if you don’t match! Each person only has five matches, some people will have to get cut from their match list. Its not personal and not a reflection of you, its just the numbers being not in your favor. Try again next time or try one of our other dating events!

I’m very excited for all the events we have on deck this month and can’t wait to see you all there! If you have any questions about our events, want advice, or just want to give feedback, DM us on instagram and let’s chat! Have a great month!

~ Lucas
